Laying in my Mama's arms
Wrapped in satin and lace
A little tiny baby
A smile on my face
Holding me so gently
Mama rocks me to sleep
Praying the Lord
My soul to keep....
I belong...
Running and playing
With my friends at school
I'm just a loner
But some think I'm cool
Sitting at my desk
Printing my A B C's
Classmates passing notes
The teacher cannot see
I belong...
Standing on the altar
Marrying the man of my dreams
Having a little family
Everything's perfect it seems
Wiping tiny noses,
Nursing boo - boo's and such
Sometimes all that's needed
Is a Mama's touch
I belong...
Years go by so swiftly
The kids now all grown
They married good spouses
Having families of their own
Gathering around my table
I see their smiling face
All little heads are bowed
As Grandpa says grace
I belong...
Sitting in a corner
In a dark and cold home
Strange how time has left me
Too much time alone
Starring into the shadows
Drowning in despair
Tear's falling from my eyes
No one seems to care...
Linda, I used to be a nurse's aide and I've seen what happens to many when they grow old--sometimes the only "real" family they have is the staff at the facility where they live. The "blood" family often only shows up on holidays, if that often. This is a beautiful and empathetic poem.

This is a brilliantly crafted poem, a real masterpiece of thought and ponderence...so well done from such an excellent poetess...fantastic piece Linda....

Growing old has its rewards and sorrows. I feel the pain in your write that happens all too often in this materialistic and throw away society we live in.
You poem brings to mind an ancient Indian (American) tradition where, when a person got to a certain point in their life they had to leave the tribe and go off alone to die. You coherent words made me realize that we are still sending our old ones away. Sometimes things stay the same.
Wow.
Just had to leave my Dad in a nursing home for the first time tonight.
I knew it was where he "belonged."
When I got home all I felt was I belonged with him.
We may be where we belong, but it never feels that way.
I always love your heart Linda.
