As far as my eye can see, someone stares back at me.
At first glance this person is, only a dot, a dream: maybe?
The pace is quick, a blink focused in black
Until I approach and get full view, my shoulders slump in slack.
The arms entwine like a massive vise, rolling on grass so green
Perfectly etched precision screams, "Oh God, it's not a dream."
A closer look brings my heart in pain; each name there, from A to Z
Calling out, "Come close, a better look you need...run your fingers on me."
Do I dare to be so bold, to touch their hearts of gold?
I must, I must...I shouldn't wait, I force my hand...unrolled.
But, I look down in reverence...there lay an old worn mitt
A picture of this long lost soul of days he must have spent.
Crying out, the tears do fall amid this great long wall
But, I am not the only one whose heart has heard the call.
Mothers, fathers, sisters too and yes, all loved one's gather near,
To catch a glimpse, to feel the touch of those who fought in fear.
The wall is real, as we know so well, time can't change what was
The past is there, its glory hails so proud in might today
Salute to you, the Vietnam brave and those who died to save
We won't forget your battle cry, we lift your names in praise.
