The lengthy passageway is dark and frightening
No windows to break the nightmarish blackness!
Terrified, she journeys alone, stumbling
Over life’s often mountainous obstacles…
How did she get here? When did it begin?
She can’t remember the good things in life.
Family, friends, love, hope…
Everything worthwhile has vanished!
Where there was sunshine, only rain…
No more laughter, only tears…
No joy…only misery…
Struggling for a reason to go on
She painfully inches forward…
It’s all she’s capable of at the moment!
Smothering beneath the heavy shroud of depression,
Each ragged breath is like thunder in her ears!
She can’t explain the hopelessness,
No one would understand! How could they?
So she lives inside the nightmare alone!
Even in her waking hours she can’t seem to shrug
The heavy load from her profoundly burdened soul!
She’d give up if she had the courage…
But somewhere deep inside
A tiny remnant of the woman she was
Keeps whispering, “you’re worthy”.
And although the voice is soft and low…
Compared to the harshness of depression’s
Persistent nerve-grating roar…
She hears it from time to time.
And it’s all she has…for the moment.
