GRIEF IS A VERY SELFISH THING - by: Linda Law

Grief is a natural part of life; whether it be through death or illness, or the pain of life...yet in the end...Grief is a process that we must admit is for ourselves...

Grief is a very selfish emotion

We do it for ourselves...

Grief is that mysterious feeling

That cannot be denied

The one we loved and lost

has moved up or down the ladder

yet in our mind, they sit upon a pedestal

without flaw, and without sin

Our grief builds them into monuments

that even we who loved them, cannot meet

Grief is a very selfish emotion

We do it for ourselves

Brushing time as if it still exists

We relive the times and pray for more

Wishing and dreaming, needing and wanting

Just a touch, a whisper, the tinkling of a bell

A bluebird, a butterfly, a time for new beginning

It cannot be, they are gone; yet we remain

To face the day, the week, our life forevermore

Without the one, who made our life worth while...

Grief is a very selfish emotion

We do it for ourselves

So if we know this, why cannot our minds change?

Why do we cling...so desperately, with such passion

Like yesterday, the sands of time seemed so slow

they trickled when there was life; now it flies

down the tunnel that we have placed ourselves

To live, yet die, over and over as we cry in our loss

Grief is a very selfish emotion

Why do we do it....We do it for ourselves....

It's natural that we each have suffered a loss during our lives...but it's so important to give hope to others that...there is peace, even tho in fragments...it comes and goes..but we manage... thank you all.

Very frank and graphic description of grief. They say anger destroys,
joy refreshes, fear numbs, but grief...it consumes.

Grief...the one thing I know for sure...it can't be buried and die, for at some point, it will rear it's head and remind us it isn't dead.

Very interesting premise on grief--made me rethink a few things. I remember I did write in my memoir on the death of my daughter that " grief was so much a part of us that we almost became comfortable with it." I know even today we are not yet able or willing to let it go--so I will be giving this a great deal of thought. Thanks.

I guess that makes me selfish too because I have experienced grief; and it is a very private, personal thing. Great write, Linda; well done!

(((HUGS)) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :(

I think you pulled this writing from the center of your heart. Only one experiencing the grief could have written this. Only one experiencing the grief can understand this.
I guess I am selfish...thanks for the writing,

Linda, this is a emotionally tightly written work, which by itself emotes deep feelings. I personally don't find 'grief' as a selfish thing, but more of a 'right of passage' for those that grieve. We process things differently and because of that... the grieving process has no time limit, only the individual knows.

You have written an excellent poem.
Peace,
Dan

Very well stated and so true as we do need time to get over loss and/or adjust to the person we cared for not being physically there. They may be always there in our hearts but they can never again wrap arms around us to hug or kiss.

Linda,

Grief is built into our soul, without it what kind of person would we be. No feeling would be like the end of time, nothing. This is a very good lesson to know for we do have compassion for other even though we continue to grief within our self. This brings us back to reality which we all need to stable our life.

Well written my Lady Linda.

Linda,

I suppose that's true, you express it so well. Of course, when a loved one passes, we cry for ourselves. But grief is also an outlet, to get rid of the demons in our heart.

Linda, this is a very good metaphoric write! I agree with you: In many instances, grief is a very selfish thing, for we do that to ourselves. We are the ones who put grieve on a pedestal and look it up everyday. Why do we do that?...It's a mystery!!

Our losses are sometimes more than we compare...and it's funny because the faults we used to see in our lost loved ones are also lost in time. For we only remember them as we knew them in our hearts, only the good, only the perfect. Loss is painful indeed and grief can destroy us if we let it...it is a very selfish thing. .Love and hugs for this Spectacular write my friend. Love and hugs, Bonnie
