Give me light to see my way;
give me hence, a brighter day.
My given light, once so pure
is dimmed by things unseen, unsure.
Show me again that brightest light,
and I'll know, again, my inner might.
then that might shall take my hand;
in facing tomorrow I'll make my stand.
This deed I cannot ask of you.
It is a deed that I must do.
The light I do so long to see
is somewhere deep inside of me.
To find the light so deep inside
by certain laws I must abide;
a pretty price I will likely pay,
but I shall have my brighter day!
Written when I was 17, this was my second poem. While tellingly simplistic in imagry, I have chosen to preserve it as is due it is a piece with nearly perfect meter, which I have learned long after writing it, is somewhat rare. It is a sound historical marker for the unfoldment of my writing.
