I can reach in my mind
and pull out memories from the past
The day our first child was born
and the problems with the last.
I can recall so many yesteryears
when you and I were young;
Remember how we laughed and played,
our lives had just begun.
When our daughter started kindergarten
I wrote her a little note,
One I would give to her,
someday when she was grown.
I still have that first hand print turkey
drawn by our only son
I can still see it brightly colored
in my mind on the wall where it hung.
Remember our baby girl,
the red tricycle she dreamed you bought!
“I will find it, I will!” she cried to me.
“I want that bike my daddy got.”
Today those kids are all grown up,
living life as they see fit
Giving us the grandchildren to
keep love’s candle lit.
Sweet long memories of the past
are coming through so clear,
Why can’t I remember what we
talked about, yesterday my dear?
Our daughter called and talked today
to see what might be wrong
Said I promised to call right back last week, wondered why it has been so long.
"You have no idea what I am talking about,
do you my sweet Mom? “
"I’m so sorry dear but you’re quite right,
my memory has gone."
Oh, how I treasure those memories
of life so long ago.
I stand here gently crying, I cannot remember what you just said.
I dedicate this poem to my family and some of the problems I've encountered with Lupus

Sherry! You've done an excellent job incorporating the types of feelings that many of us with Lupus have had and are still going through! Thank you! It's so important that we have our past memories to cherish and to look back upon. Now, many years later, we tend to forget the things that have occured 'only yesterday', but thank the Lord, we can enjoy our memories of long ago, when life seemed simpler, or at least, a sweeter time when our family was younger and we felt like different people. God bless you, Dear, for sharing your thoughts so accurately with us, that we, too, can empathize with you.

Being another woman with SLE....This poem touched me deeply. I never was able to have children, but I was lucky enough to adopt a beautiful baby girl 23 yrs ago. Very well written Sherry.......
What a beautiful and intensely powerful poem. It is scary to have to go through this and the fear of it approaching someday alone could be paralyzing. Peace be with you.

A powerful poem beautifully written. Lupus and it's accompanying "brain fog" is brought out so well by the author. Loved it!
