I wrote this poem for a dear friend of mine who had lost her husband of many years. He died of cancer after fighting a mighty battle. "Bob, we'll always miss you".
The shell of a man's body lying in bed. So weak now he can barely lift his head. Not much time left to say good-bye. Help me hold the tears, no time to cry. A lifetime of sharing the mysteries of life. Enjoying the good time, overcoming the strife. How can I let go of the shell that I love? Free him to be with God above. Oh God I feel selfish, I want him by my side. I don't want to turn loose his spirit to glide. I walk into the room, he smiles kindly at me. Pain racks his body; it is all I can see. Gently, with ease, I sit on the side of his bed. Trying to find words, things need to be said. The shell of a man's body shivers with pain. Each rattling breath is taking its strain. Oh, God it hurts to know what I must say. The shell of a man's body is slipping away. Have you made your peace with God, I ask of him? A look of pure love crosses his face in a grin. He reaches for me with his hands held high. I lean forward, he kisses me goodbye. Goodbye my love, it is time for you to go. I am going to be okay, I want you to know. The shell of a man's body remained on the bed. As his life force went soaring on ahead.
So moving. It reminded me of when my Dad passed away in January.

Oh, what a heartbreaker! Too beautiful and too sad for words, but a lovely tribute to your friend and her husband. Surviving is the hardest thing to do.
