Forever Hero

The years had never prepared us

For the things we share today

I had always seen you as bigger than life

And you loved being my forever hero

For years you worked as a warrior, an officer

Holding ever fast to your gentleman’s heart

But as your hair turned gray, they sent you home

There was no longer a place in the sky for "The Old Man"

For the first time, you found your weaknesses

You were battling the demons, now surfaced, from your lifetime

The blood that once rushed through your veins

Now trickled through them as bitter wine

Your castle began to crumble

No longer needing your massive strength

And sharp edge of conviction

You bid goodbye to the man you had always been

With change can often come a rebirthing

In time you began to hunger for my strength

And you became honored to share our love

As together we watched the sun, rise upon your life

Time has softened you, my love

I smile as I watch you tending the roses

Sleeping in the hammock with the cat upon your chest

And resting in the sun, watching the butterflies

I never thought that you would change, like this

I thought you would remain ever staunch, a warrior’s heart

But as you have grown into a gentle man

I have finally found my partner, my forever hero
