Parallel Pathways

Our love is an addictive drug for both of us

As toxic as arsenic

As sweet as wild cherry wine

We tried to join our lives once

With different dreams, we walked on parallel pathways

We were young, foolish and so much in love

You needed me to become something I was not

And I needed you to lift me above the sting of my childhood

Through our struggles we failed to see the perfection of our union

We had all the right pieces

But when the puzzle was completed

The picture appeared askew to both of us

We have lived our lives in separate realms

And we both have struggled to find some happiness

Without the other by our side

Both of our souls were broken

The day the dream exploded and I went away

Knowing neither could walk the other’s path

I have learned how to live without you

After all of these long years

Though I have never learned how not to love you

Please stay away, my wounds are forever fresh

I cannot be near you and not bleed

And you cannot be near me and not need what we never found

Wow! Sherry! This was excellent!

Two people who love deeply and yet cannot be together because each want to travel different paths in life. Painful indeed!

sometimes it just be's like that don't it, sherri...and it's best, to keep the distance fresh. star-crossed lovers, i think the syndrome's called, and it is a necessary condition of a life lived to experiene the fullness of what it means to truly be humane.

Oh Sherry wow this one reaches deep into your soul and makes it shed bittersweet tears! So very, very good! I've yet to experience this exactly. When mine was gone all I could think was THANK GOD! LOL I don't even care to be friends with the devil now much less talk to him, but then he was bad to the bone and abusive to boot. We were not cut from the same cloth and so I was more than happy to say HIT THE ROAD JACK AND DON"T COME BACK! LOL It took me 16 yrs to get enough courage to do it but hey its over and now I've found a real beautiful soulmate and love............

Loved this Sherry, beautifully writen!

Hugs

A true poemization of relation's reality poetized with words from the lexicon of the soul under the rhythm of the drums of life... "Parallel Pathways" is a poetic compliance.

I salute You, Sublime Poet!

Breathtakingly searing, Sherry. Like walking on broken glass. Final stanza is awesome. I can also read this as the absolute inverse - left-handed brain again, I guess. Actually the pain of having lived an emotional lie, not sharing common ground or the dream at all, but struggling to hold things together and not recognising that you both hold the pieces of two DIFFERENT jigsaw puzzles... in fact failing, through the desire to overcome and for the relationship to succeed, to see the IMperfection of the union. Either way, heartbreak and tragedy ensue, one way or another, living with or without... ain't life and love complex? And each and every person is unique, and each and every relationship. Makes me wonder how we ever make sense of anything... A stirring and emotionally honest write. TY Kate xx

Bittersweet in its emotional revealing, Sherry. A sadness we have all felt. Some people come into our life as a mirror to show us ourselves. When they leave, they take a part of us. Like the "phantom leg", we still feel their presence...Lin

Ah, those poignant, lonely words, "What might have been...." And in this case, what cannot be. So who or what ever said we could not love even though we cannot live together??!! A love such as that never tarnishes.....

Beautiful, lonely write, Sherry. Peace. Joyce

Yup, the loves that never were haunt us to the end of our days. I believe that most of us have that kind of feeling within ourselves as we move through life. Some have been foolish to try to heal old wounds, but the remembrance of hurts and harsh words usually makke that dream impossible. good poem.

Sherry this took my breath away, so familiar it is sure to resonate with many. I'm always amazed at how we can love so deeply yet for the most puzzling reasons, let it go. It seems we work at most problems in life a lot better than we ever do at the one we want most to love and be loved. Will we ever know the answer? Beautiful tender passion in this gem Sherry!
