I would like to keep my flowers of love
on your feet
I would like to gift
my tender heart to you
I would like to present
all my five senses to you
I would like to mortgage
entire life for you
I myself lit my pire
and sacrifice my life for you
BUT---- that 'YOU'
respects a woman as a woman
and not as a Toy in the shop
and that 'YOU'
will not be greedy for ' DOWRY'.
and that ' YOU'
will not be sold as a commodity in the market.

Dowry is the social evil in INDIA. Thousands of young brides, women are dying and committing suicides everyday. This poem is dedicated to all such hapless victims in the hands of Dowry. This is the transalation of my poem in Telugu.

I have a friend from India, and the stories she has told me are barbaric to say the least. I guess it's a way of life, and is expected. Like some kids walk around with green hair. I say live and love free.

This is true what you are saying. I once watched a program on the TV which showed how the poor girls in India were being treated and harmed by their spouses and in-laws just because they had less dowry to offer to the families......and some girls were being murdered by own family members because they just could afford dowries and yet they don't want their daughters to be mistreated and suffer through her life.

Why is love measured by the dowry? Why do young girls have to suffer emotionally, psychologically? Is there real love to the marriage anymore rather to be measured by the size of the dowry?

Young people should be given a chance to fall in love, and not to be feeling ashamed toward their own families.

Give the young people a chance to live, love and laugh. Everyone deserves to be born happy, and not to be born sad.
