Having had a 2nd home in Chincoteague, VA (yes, where the ponies are)I spent many Friday and Sunday evenings headed either South or North. At some point, I began to notice the signs of the rivers, the creeks, the little wetland areas down Route 13. And the poem wrote itself.

Come:
Ride with me.

            Susquehanna,
            Patuxent
            Chesapeake,
            Tuckahoe,
            Choptank,
            Nanticoke,
            Chicamacomico,
            Wicomico,
            Manokin,
            Pocomoke,
            Chincoteague,
            Assateague …

Listen:

You can hear their voices in
The whisper of the marsh grass,
The brush of heron wings,
The cricket’s song.

Gorgeous - their legend lives on, in Nature's hush, in the names of the towns where they dwelt - I adore this.

Oh--that's terrific! Those long gone people, whose lost language still sings to us of their birds and their beloved land!

The Eastern shore is one of the truly great areas
of the country. Your beautiful poem took me back there
again. Thanks for the ride.

Patti, this to me (as you can imagine) is paradise in poetry.
I've traveled that route many times. There's poetry in the names
you posted. And the closing lines take me home. Thank you for this. Sorry I did get here sooner to welcome you to the Den. -gene.
