Endeavour
She fell behind schedule
On her way to her final resting place.
How fortuitous!
Perhaps she and her crews were granted a little extra
Time to say Goodbye.
We should all be so lucky
Or as deserving as they.
After 25 missions and
123 million miles
They all have earned a rest
And a place in history.
Named for the vessel
That sailed the South Pacific
Under the command of Captain Cook
Endeavour earned her way
Into the heavens and into our hearts.
She marks the end of one era
And the beginning of another.
Space travel is not for the timid
It requires vision and courage
And character
In the best sense of those words.
Vision to see where others
Can not.
Courage to soar where others
Will not.
And the character to do what others
Dare not.
Endeavour now rests on a precipice.
Climb up on to her shoulders
If you can.
See farther than others
If you will.
And transport us all into the future
If you dare.
