A friend recently dubbed me "The Marquis of the Mountain" (in French). I guess it is better than being dubbed, "The Fool on the Hill." ☺

The Marquis of the Mountain

The marquis of the mountain is alone tonight
None of his lovely lady friends can join him
Circumstances of life and decisions made
He is not sad… …not really
He listens to the moans of the wind outside his home
He does not pine
In hand a glass of wine
A caress of music in his ears
He does not want to feel
He would rather not think
He would rather dream
It is too early for sleep
He thinks of her
He falls asleep in spite of himself
And dreams
Another year is extinguished
The lord of the mountain
Is still here
For the time being

Good stuff....
Alone in the mountains ain't so bad.
Time to reflect, ah but then you said you'd rather not think.
I know the feeling.

A rather sad, but thoughtful write. I guess this can apply towards anyone that's lost a love. Beautiful write Regis.

I think a lot of us of a certain age can empathise with your words...
The absolute charm of this poem for me is it's title and the enigmatic atmosphere you have created....eerily beautiful....
Best wishes for this New Year....full of promise for the taking..

Heart touching and I can picture the whole scene. Well penned Regis, I like that red sweater and hat in your bio, red looks good on you, complementing your black beard.

A bit haunting, no need to pine , wine is just fine!

"The marquis of the mountain is alone tonight" - this drew me in. The rest of the write is beautiful imagery. And I appreciate the cadence of the French as well. I'm rusty in my French - thanks for the reminder of expression in different languages and how it influences the write.

possibly you have seen her already---

I know that feeling. When it seems like you are at the peak of your existence… But alone. It helps not to try too hard to make it happen. But you have to leave that mountain and explore… They say there are many fishes in the sea. All you have to do is find the fish that likes your mountain as much as you do. Viola! The fool on the hill becomes the lord of all he surveys!

I hear ya, Reg...pining away on your snow covered mountain, but you are allowing that woman that left to have a hold over you...man, you NEED to just let it go...life is too short to stress over ended relationships...get out on your bike and ride that stress off & while you're at it, ride an extra mile for me...Find peace/piece, my friend...-e-
