My son came to see me and ask my advice,
It seems he had a dilemma concerning his wife,
He said "I don't want to hurt her but I think that I might,
If I was to tell her what happened last night,
You see her friend came to visit, while she was away,
It was her very best friend, since her childhood days,
So I invited her in and offered a drink,
But she said "We can do better than that, don't you think?"
Then she came on to me, but I flatly refused"
Tears welled in his eyes, he looked so sad and confused.
He said the girl was so angry that he'd turned her down fat,
She stormed out of the house screaming, "No one does that"
And threatening to say that I'd made the first move,
He said, "It would finish my Dad, if Kathleen believed it was true ,
I know I should tell her, but it would break her poor heart,
Yet if I don't and her friend does, it could tear us apart",
He said, "I really don't know what to do for the best",
Then he looked up and asked, "Dad what would you suggest"?
And I had dreaded that question, though I knew it would come,
So I plucked up my courage and said to my son,
That a similar experience had happened to me,
In the early years of our marriage, way back in loves history,
But I had not had the willpower that my son had displayed,
And to my shame, his poor mother had been cruelly betrayed,
By myself and her best friend and it's my greatest regret,
Though it was before he was born, it still torments me yet,
For though his mother forgave me, things were never the same,
I'd lost the trust she had in me, and I had no one to blame,
Except a moment of weakness I displayed in my youth.
So the advice that I gave him, was, "tell Kathleen the truth,
Because her trust is the one thing you must keep at all costs,
For it cannot be replaced, if ever it’s lost,
And whatever the outcome you'll have her respect,
And she'll believe you over her friend, I'd be willing to bet,
Because she probably knows what her best friend is like,
And love you all the more, for not wanting that type,
Though shocked at my confession, he was no longer confused
He thanked me and said, "Now I know what to do"
And I told him, I'm proud of what you have done,
You’re a much better man than I have been, my son.
