It seems like the stories from an Old Soldier are all pretty much the same ... they aren't.
Ramblings of an Old Soldier
Sometimes it seems like yesterday,
especially in flashback memories,
the bond between soldiers.
Those raucus times that
make one laugh out loud,
and weep, and laugh again
telling stories, and maybe
keep a few to ourselves.
We were so bold, so proud,
so full of life, and yet
we trod the narrow ledge of mortality.
Let no one judge the soldier
lest he himself has stood staring
fully into the face of death.
Is this all there is in a soldier's future?
Just hearts and stars, and
colored bits of ribbon?
Is this all the reward for
facing deadly peril for your country?
Flashback dreams, cold sweats, and
agoraphobia?
Soldiers stand in unswerving dedication
to keep you safe at home.
They are our children, our
brothers and sisters,
protectors of our hopes and dreams.
They are rewarded by prejudice,
pushed about as pawns in
battles not of their choosing, often
made the scapegoat for
the rotting sins of Congress.
They deserve more --
much more!
They deserve the support
of a grateful nation.
It is most unfortunate that this world has not "evolved" at all when it comes to war and such and that soldiers continue to fight, to suffer, and to die. Love and peace to you, Dallas.
You are absolutely right! Unfortunately, those in power that use war to advance their causes could care less about the soldier, the one who gets in the line of fire and suffers from flashbacks and other trauma from the time of his involvement in the ghastly conflict they call gloriously, “War.”
325 letters my father wrote to my mother during his time in World War II.
Woven together in a timeline of events of three of his brothers, 5 brothers-in-law, and one cousin, all 10 of them were in WWII at the same time.
