My sorrow is a stagnant loss

of marsh and vines and somber moss.

'Tis quiet here where hope is hushed,

cursed and covered, closed and crushed.

The festered grief of bottomland

where dolor drains to mud and sand--

The rotting corpse of my demise--

the dismal depths where sadness lies.

The fetid stain of dark decay--

the mire and mold of aged dismay.

For nothing lower might I gain

than swamps where sin and death have lain.

Escape will come 'cross bog and vine

in vapors of a wraith's design,

For only death can take me hence--

  the dying of my penitence.
