Equalizing the Equation of the Written Word, in Thirteen Parts

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

Sunday, August 7, 2005

There is a belligerence within me
which seems beyond my control.
It squirms and writhes, and refutes
common sense, like a devil
let loose. It wants, crookedly,
to have what it wants, to have
it all. All desires, all cravings,
all of what it deems it needs. It haunts
my soul, promises, with fierce
facetiousness, anything, and worse,
if I will comply with its allure
to destroy myself, since
that is the nature of devils.

There is a defiance within me
which tells me I am more
than mortal flesh. It whispers
its wiles into my head, asking
if I am satisfied with death unlived,
because, there is life after life,
and it wants me to travel among
its peers. It wraps me in corners
of undertones, shuffles my reason
without rectitude, proclaims
the heights I aspire to as moot
in the force of cosmic aptitude.

There is an anger within me
that can’t stand imprisonment
of my soul on an obtusing world.
It swirls and snakes and agitates
any calm I obtain in diffusive
understanding of the hopeless
rearranging of my parts. It
smothers and smoothes my attitude
of survival. And, hollows tomorrow’s
acquittals of nonsensical riddles.
Where rhymes aren’t worth a dime.

There is a repugnance within me
which shows me there is no way
to proceed without bursting my seams.
It slithers from under my wings
while hatching hateful images of tarpit
apathy, hissing an ordure, which reeks,
of all things, of me… How can this be?
With latent, lateral questioning of harbored
ages of reap-ening – there is no raincoat
big enough to hide my darkest thoughts.

There is a dagger within me,
its lovely keenness fragments everyday
as night lights up my heart’s dismay,
since falling down now requires a sacrifice.
I must commence the rites of sight,
stagger with each stab’s delight, pondering
a nothingness while abilities to comprehend
humanity’s end slip past my guard.
Damn that guard! The wall is falling…

There is a propensity within me,
oh, so dear and tightly clasped with hooks
of mental steeliness, of earth-bound fear
eating me alive, I watch Sci-Fi. The
flagellation never stops, no clocks
have flogged another’s gift into such seas
of filthiness of self-examination
as to worth of ‘acrimony-high’.

There is a disgust within me,
laughing righteously, mirroring my mirror
of thoughtlessness, my wasted time,
and effortless non-giving of the core of
my being, because, I’m scared who I
might find there – duality will surely demand
to see the receipt of where I was bought.

There is a calmness within me
which squeaks with frightened memories, illusive,
in a TV tabloid sense, and rare. Silly
flatness stares into space, debating confusions of
who to place the bet on, oh, wait, that’s me
all the time, riding the contour of the circle.

There is a me within me,
and I cannot stand its knowledgeability,
its power to unnerve, to awaken
the trumpets of self-explanation,
to equalize the equation of the written word.

There is a terror within me,
the terror of being recognized, accessible,
never-alone-while-singular, wailing
and weeping songs of cremated homes.

There is a fever within me
which freezes my complicity into a ball of dust,
volumnized, and stuffed into my empty skin…

There is an infant within me
developing its Passport-picture personality.

There is a belligerence within me...

Brilliant self-flagellation Erin. Tortured rationalizations always pierce our walls. In the end we find contentment even though the infant will scream a lot before being birthed. The duality of human beings is never truly ended till death. Maybe that's as it should be?

Undone, once more, by the sharpness of emotion in these lines -- one of your best. Yes. Well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Wow, this is a powerful capturing of the conflicting desires and characteristics that drive and restrain us all. Impressively rendered, the author displays intensity of spirit as well as impressive skill in expression. Well done, Erin.

Wonderful work, as always from you. To me, the winner is the 12th part; the infant with the Passport-picture personality......"and a child shall lead you"...... henry

Dera Erin-No one at a glance might guess how alone we are or aren't. I imagine Sybil, if not revealed by her own words not draw suspicious attention of her life. An equation of Sybils conflicts might appear a mechanical damnation to mankinds free seeking nature-yet not all men are Sybil and Sybils' equation is about Sybils' problems (though we all use the same language but in one part(at a time)),which I assume include an enraged engulfing infant-which if not fed doesnt feed (in its' quieter moments). The fameous book Who's who in America is always you as it is always Sybil (even if she had a microphone in her head put there by men from outer space).

could bring great mental anguish if persons repeat the same moral to get it all together when all you feel to do is something against your moral conscious, like to take them apart for the thought.
Life is full of such petty poblems until the big guys come along saying sadly your compasionate weaknessess are preventing you from solving your problems effectively. And if these guys arent too big a person can find a very just outlet for his frustrations, obstructing knowlege of the mixups stupidity of others', confusion and a big picture that's not all there in palace at every moment (equation of the written word "into" thirteen parts) a circle only can have 360 degrees, people only chose so many friends and lovers .
Your numero one and and numero thirteen is one too many.

Aside from all that, I myself like to sleep, eat ride the bus, look and watch people and panhandle, to take things slow and easy.

A walk through the vicissitudes of life and how they can effect a person and their attitudes and leave them with feelings of dispair that feeds on itself but yet leaves the windows of hope open. An introspective write that shines with the brilliance of the authors pen.

Feeding belligerence can be a self destructive habit, so beware of the consequences. This is a very powerful writing and extensive search into self analysis. I'm glad your outlet is writing. I'm going to be reading more of you. (smile) I enjoyed! Leah

Heavy words from a very strong pen. EQUALIZING takes readers on a long cold walk through the valley of the shadow of despair; yet the beautiful irony and paradox here, from where this specific reader stands, is the extraordinary shimmer of intelligence and spiritual courage that illuminates every line.
