The Disappointment

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

Tuesday, June 6, 2006

She’s a disappointment
To many. Well, maybe several,
Loved, yet, criticized.

Sometimes, after talking on the phone,
She feels washed out. She is
A disappointment, while
Slightly maniacally genius. Ah, but,
That genus of genes rakes feelings,
As you’d suppose.

She’s coming to believe
Truthful speaking of self
Leaves others traumatized.
She’s unacceptable, but, not
As some fantasy, as reality,
Torn apart by vigilant eyes
Of others minds.

She hears about people
Who are so wonderful,
And, knows she will
Never be ‘so wonderful’.
She wonders if that’s okay,
Knowing it isn’t, by proxy.

She feels too old to fall on knees
Not working, through Love, and Age.
Knows eternity’s miles
Are disembarking, somewhere
In the ‘Universe’. Not here, though,
Not yet, not again. Sometimes eternity
Loves a small house, sometimes,
Star-meadows of hows…

Sometimes, after talking on the phone,
She feels wrung out by
Family, she knows she is
A disappointment, loved,
Yet, criticized. She understands
The feeling, as you’d suppose.

She’s a disappointment, made
By many, well, maybe by herself,
Loved, yet, criticized.

Sometimes, she thinks
She is lucky.

A poignant poem about lack of self-worth. It is one with which I can identify because I have had those feelings all my life.I am a war baby and have experienced discrimination throughout my life because of my sex. I do feel that the diamond-shaped question marks are not required to get the message across to readers.I enjoyed reading your poem.

Have we met? Ha.
Of course there is a fine line between frankness (truthful speaking), and being rude and opinionated. Sometimes it is a fine line, and crossing it can be seen as arrogance, but those 'wonderful' people often seem to good to be true. Most of just do our best, but still disappoint someone. Good and unique piece.

Honest to the bone.
Wrapped in eloquent garb.
Well done.

Dear Erin . . .

It seems as if you are describing your delightfully enigmatic daughter.

When someone has been called to be a "different" wildflower, who sees life with different eyes, there will always be those opinionated family members, or those reformed, sedentary, uninspired types, you know what I mean, that rail against what they will never be.

I have a phrase that I often levy against those "types" with utmost exuberance, but it is too crude here in the presense of a lady!

Tell She, that she is blessed, and also to STAND STRONG and never waver in her pursuits!

In respect most honored Poet!

Oh can relate to this, Erin. "Odd" one of the family who tells it like it is and doesn't feed the disfunction. And having outgrown the role I fulfilled in my younger years--well just what can they make of me, lol? A somewhat lonely place, yet a healthier and more self-evolved one I think. Excellent poem...

As long as she doesn't disappoint the 'she' that she wants to be then I can't see her ever being a disappointment to herself. Or that was my thought when I reread the verse. It seemed to be an evalution of other peoples opinions of the person content with being who 'she'/'they' want to be. "To thine own self be true". :)
