A Life Of Leaving
You reached for those you thought you’d mend,
Believing rescue earns the end,
You linger just enough to show,
You’re strong enough to never go.
You choose the ones who splinter too,
Who flinch the moment as you do,
Avoid the calm of holding tight,
And keep the windows cracked for flight.
Each fight and flight becomes a chain,
Rebuilding walls around the pain,
And nothing new can take its root,
While you still guard the child you mute.
Your feet won’t stick in softer ground,
Which keeps your heart from being found,
You dwell in shadows of regret,
As if it is your safest bet.
A life of leaving shaped your tune,
You had to grow up way too soon,
And now each hand you might let near,
Feels like the one that cost you dear.
