My Military Men

It's so very important to remember and appreciate every single day, our men and women serving in the military. Many are away from loved ones. Many loved ones are waiting and worrying. Their sacrifice is not to be forgotten!

MY MILITARY MEN
 
 
Both my dad and my husband
answered the call from Uncle Sam.
My dad served during WWII,
my husband in Viet Nam.
 
There was never any question
of whether to go or stay.
If we're to have our freedom.
there'll always be a price to pay.
 
They each left their happy homes
and all their family and friends.
 Everyone praying every night
their respective wars would quickly end.
 
My dad served in the Navy.
My husband was Army bound.
Each one completed his duty,
neither of them giving any ground.
 
My husband left me
with little more than an "I love you."
I'm just standing there alone,
no choice, but try to make due.
 
The serviceman has the battle.
Those at home just count the days.
They worry, fret and struggle
willing their warrior to be safe.
 
We try to rally their morale,
cheerful letters everyday,
trying to sound optimistic,
though we seldom feel that way.
 
So when congratulating the warrior,
remember also, those left behind.
Just acknowledging their contribution
would really be so kind
 
And, when we rally for the victory
think of those who remained at home.
Just know they suffered too,
often, totally on their own.

I was married to a man who served for 29 years in hopes of retirement and a good life. Sadly Agent Orange took him away from me. Why I wrote A picture on the Pillow.

thank you for posting this very important reminder, donna! i come from
a family with a long record of men going off to war-beginning with the
revolutionary war right down to present day- i've two precious young
nephews serving in afghanistan at this moment.

Super Donna! Loved the poem about the military. Spent 24 yrs. in the USAF. Many fond memories but the BEST is yet to come! Amen!

It's so hard for wives and children who see their men go off to war. And not only men, women too. How much better the world would be without war. Good poem Donna. Thank you for reading my poem.

A very powerful, heart moving poetic tribute that seems to march before us with a majestic cadence of its own. I was a military man, and I salute your dad and husband's noble service. You remind us of those who remain back at the home front. Very fitting indeed.

What a wonderful tribute to the military men in your life! Thank you for pointing out the people who are left behind at home; as a former military wife, I know first hand how difficult it is to carry on while dad is gone, putting on a brave front while mom has her fears for the future. A touching write, Donna. These brave men and women who gave their lives so willingly ought to be highly commended. The loved ones they leave behind are to be equally commended, for it can't be easy knowing the danger their men/women are in. Both have my respect and prayers.

I do not think we as Americans do not support our troops. It is the wars like Nam, and Iraq, we do not support. I say this as a veteran of the Korean war.
