Daughter, Little Sunny


The dawning sun
Gelded morning's horizon
In radiant gold-and blacks and grays
Exploded into the glow of day

Daughter, little Sunny was born
A burst of energy
Radiant with innocence
Robust with the gift of life

Moments grew into years
No matter my resistance
And Sunny grew healthy
Boundless, joyful and strong

She became blue eyes--ever aware
Grace of motion, golden hair
A cherubic face
A captivating imp in angelic guise

Strong little hands
Grip my leg, little feet
Churn her up onto my lap
And she gives Daddy "kisses all-ober"

The dog knows he's in trouble
When he sees her run
She dives on his back
And they tussle, together

Drumming little legs sprint for the phone
"It's Gram-mamma an' Gran-daddy"
I hear you struggle to speak
The language of adults

Big Sister is idol supreme
You call her Dee Dee
And I watch in rapture, amazed
As my girls play, learn, grow together
