 Our Restless Minds

by John Herlihy

Our restless minds are never completely at rest,
Always on the move, never at home in the nest.
Where is the beloved silence of empty rooms?
Our clutter of thoughts swept away by brooms.

Worry, sorrow, and anxiety all come to the fore,
Uninvited, unannounced, there to fill our store.
As busy bees searching for nectar far from the hive,
Scribbled notes on yellow post-its saying, I'm alive.

A ruined garden now filled with thriving weeds,
Once budding blossoms drawn from tiny seeds.
The mind surges as a river that forever flows,
Reaching stunning highs, falling to desperate lows.

All random thoughts finally flow out into the sky,
Set free by the mind and never questioned on high.
Ah, the silence of a mind eve quiet without cease
With nary a care in the world and feeling at peace.

In depth look at our minds. Beautifully written the way the mind stays active until we find a way to relax and shut down all the thoughts…"to sleep, per chance to dream."

I suppose, John, there are many with self-study awareness, but I fear far too many don't address the issus of mind clutter and distractions. Still, a person such as yourself sees, as I do, that when a frustration with one's experiences feel disruptive, we find ways to explore a solution... such a poetry. I spent all last night with one such quandry. I remsin thankful for my work schedule, my writing schedule and my small crevise of free time schedule. I have to admit, much of what your insightful poem suggests, is being practiced to a large extent with always searching for answers and letting imagination fill in so much. Thank you for bringing your thoughts to the page. Namaste.
