Poem Artwork
-->"Each friend represents a world in us,
A world not yet born until they arrive,
And it is only by this meeting,
That a new world is born."

Anais Nin

Music: Daybreak

He first appeared at my door
On a cold dawn, months ago
Now, he actually knocks on it
Even in the rain or in the snow

I have no idea why he picked my door
Especially with all of our dogs and cats
But now, he visits me every morning
We’ve both come to love our little chats

His arrival is always announced by Flower
She sits in the window, waiting for him now
When she first spots him, she prances all about
She alerts me to his presence, with loud meows

And Flower’s loud meows also now alert our canines
Who all now anxiously rush to the door, to bark at him
He defiantly stares back at them, with no worries or fear
He must know their chances of catching him are very slim

He also knows that when I now open the front door to greet him
I will have some very delectable nuts for his early morning feast
I perch out on the steps, as he eagerly chomps on his breakfast
He grunts, and he groans, and he eats, while he chatters with me

I still have absolutely no idea what he is talking to me about
And I doubt that he understands any of the words that I say
But both of us enjoy our morning visits out on my front steps
After a while, we say our good-byes, and we both go our way

Each friend represents a world in us,
A world not yet born until they arrive,
And it is only by this meeting,
That a new world is born.

Peewee... Fine True Tale. Yrs ago . our house I started placing a trail of peanuts in shells, from gras to steps to back porch floor. Our Lil "Tree Rat learned quickly.
Then, one morning when I was late, there he was... Hanging on the screen of inner kitchen door! "Where's My Nuts?" He chattered! 😜

As I read this, I couldn't help but smile at the synergy of purpose shown in your work here and my latest posting. Certainly your nutty friend is part of my Awakening Perpetually" as well.

I'm the local ogre. We have many, many, little squirrels that visit each day and have no problem cleaning out the bird feeders. I bought 80 pounds of sunflower seeds just this morning. Cute yes. Our dogs JJ, Kali and Nilla have been enlisted as a sort of loss control program. At least the squirrels have to work for their lunch. cuz p

Delightful piece! We had a little frog like this that visited....
There is something that passes from animal to human that is intangible yet very real...
A sort of meaningful energy...no words necessary, but a deep understanding exists...
It really is very special...

...wonderful words mixed with "Daybreak"
rhythm and handful of "delectable nuts"
...way to start...morning conversation
with a friendly little squirrel...man/animal
communication takes on a deeper meaning.
Thank you Mr. Ed for sharing your verse.

up at the park i hang out, next to the town's marina, live a sole squirrel that climbs down a tremendous oak and begs for some scraps or rather demands them if i don't respond as quickly as he expects ... he (or she) is a real riot ... then it's off to the swans and geese and by the shore to get an occasional glimpse trout, hawks and turkey vultures ... the variety of animals these is real cool ... though i would be hesitant to go a little further north, the brown bears are way overpopulated and breaking into yes, suburban homes ... anyway, enjoyed reading about your conversation ... man and animals do communicate in their own sense of language ...

City squirrels can be quite friendly, just like country squirrels can be quite elusive. When I was a kid I marveled how they would come to me whenever I stole a few of our eating nuts to my mother's dismay to feed the squirrels. I enjoyed too little tricks: first, I would put a not under my hand and hold it tight. A squirrel would, gently but firmly with its paws, try to pry my fingers open to get at the nut, never biting me or showing any aggression. Secondly, I would hold a nut at my hip, and the squirrel would climb my leg like climbing a tree to grab the nut from my fingers. I must admit that the strength of their little legs and the sharpness of their climbing claws was quite a sensation through my jeans. ;-)

Those little creatures talk to us and think we can understand them; and in most cases we do. That is how they communicate with us.

My husband goes out to Tim Horton's for morning coffee everyday around 6 a.m., and at the parking lot there is a squirrel that comes to him everyday, and he would give him some of his bagels. The squirrel knows him well. Also there is a little raccoon beginning to come around to him too lately. These are his private little friends. They know my hubby, and know exactly what time my hubby is going to be there everyday to feed them. Heeeheee!!!!
