Sometimes I look in the mirror
just to say hello to myself,
and remember what I look like.
When you're alone,
you don't need a name
and you have no face.
About grief: they tell you that
you'll get over it in time, but
they never say how much time.
How long, for instance,
to forget a smile? The music
of a familiar voice on the phone?
The rhythmic breathing
of a sleeping partner?
The sound of someone
singing in the kitchen?
It's easy to tell a person
they have to go on living,
but it's not much help.
One day a friend asked me
what I missed most.
I told him, "Everything."
This is a great line: I told him, "EVERYTHING."
