The hurting of keeping a secret

Poem Artwork

Many of us have seen something

We wished we had not seen.

And wonder if we should tell someone

Though more pain it would bring.

Most of us have heard a lie

And wished that we had not.

And if we did repeat it

Would soon be asking Why?

Someone has a secret they keep

they choose to never state.

For if they ever voiced it

Consequences they would reap.

Thoughts haunt once in a while.

So with our Secrets we remain,

Out of our minds, it can't hurt us

And hides deep within our smile.....

Covering my mouth, I can not speak.

Covering my ears, I can not hear.

Covering my eyes, I can not see.

But, still........I can feel.

Confidentiality was a by-word to me professionally for over 40 years. There were only two conditions to break the vow of silence, the likelihood of physical harm to self or others. Otherwise, it is all about being a silly human. M.True

Fortunately, the rats who behave that way are well known by those who matter. One thing is for certain--never trust them!
Very well written, Lark.

Glad I have no secrets to tell but "truth" be told, I would much rather NOT know any...so much less drama & stress...e

Beautifully artistic how you wrote this piece...secrets are only secrets if they are treated holy and muffled with temperance. I love how you crafted this work.

a hard topic to delve into at least much past surface thinking...you've managed to take us deeper ...forced some of us to unlock, re-examine and face again some difficult questions

Then there are the secrets that are fun ones such as a surprise for someone or a kindness that we've done and not telling anyone, but I do know what you are expressing in this poem which is so well written.

Love ya!

It can be so difficult to know when to step in- if at all.
The last line says it all.
Well done.

Well done! Your poem reminds me of a boss who was literally stealing money from a fund and telling the staff workers to cover up her dirty laundry. Then one day she came in drunk to work and started making nasty comments about others in from of the student helpers. That was enough. I turned her in to social actions so they could help her. She refused any help so proceedings were made to remove her from her job. In the end, I was the rat who turned her in. Looking back, I think I did her a favor as I think she was on her way to self-destruction. MORAL: No good deep goes unpunished but unveiling secret dirt is well worth it!

A universal concern that some have more than others. Probably the greatest cause of suicide. On the other hand, those with few secrets tend to live long, happy lives.

Well-written and well said. But I won't keep it secret, because I want it to be read.

Yeah, I relate to secrets untold, and while it may have had its consequences if it had been told, I am the consequence of it not being told.
