Thinking of my bipolar son and how he describes himself

Poem Artwork

My soul drifts aimlessly in times of hopelessness.

It searches tirelessly for meaning and truth...

Yet, finds no direction.

My heart bleeds quietly in times of loneliness.

It yearns to find warmth and happiness...

Yet, that somehow eludes me.

My eyes seek out visions in times of want.

They gaze endlessly through the blackness that envelops them...

Yet, they cannot see the light.

My ears listen earnestly in times of silence.

They search for familiar sounds to comfort and console...

Yet, they cannot hear past the darkness that surrounds me.

My arms reach out frantically in times of despair.

They seek strength and compassion to enfold me...

Yet, they find nothing substantial to enwrap.

My mind cries out desperately in times of solitude.

It poses intense questions that demand answers...

Yet, none are found.

My fingers reach out earnestly in these times of confusion.

They type the letters of a familiar and calming name, voice, mind...

And gratefully, my lifeline to sanity... remains intact for another day.

This pain and suffering is described by too many friends and relatives.
I pray for a quick end of this pain and suffering for all. Amen

Unfortunately, most of these people do not have access to those doctors because for the most part they can't function well enough to work or have insurance. They get the left over bad MDs who do not like their jobs and do not care, at least that has been our experience here in Comal County, TX. No counseling available, and bipolars often need med changes. Doesn't happen with uncaring psychiatrists, so the ill do not take their meds, for this and a variety of other reasons. They receive attention when they commit crimes.

It's hard for me to fathom what is on the mind of someone who is bipolar, or has any other mental illness, for that matter. I'm grateful that there are doctors willing to try to seek answers and cures so that these people can lead less tormented lives and more productive ones.

Many families are beginning to see this scenario in their homes and family I know how difficult it is to monitor the degree that someone who is bipolar is to ensure that all is alright and it keeps you on your toes. EXcellent write, Lark You have described very well what you must go through.

I have a neighbor that is afflicted with this disease, though he does nothing to try to get better, no drugs, no therapy, nothing...one day he will kill someone or himself...its a shame...

Someone close to me is gunning for the wall.
There is not even time to fathom the darkness- only jump out of the way.
I hope- there is hope.

Life can seem dark at times, but there is always something better up ahead. Tell your boy to stay with us. Things get better even though things may seem to go dark. This does present a bleak picture but it does show he has hope. May he get better and better Lark. Bob

One can only guess at the darkness that this awful disease can be to a person afflicted with it. I think the poem has explained it in words the ordinary person can "get." I know I got it.

A very good poem. It does manage to capture the confusion of living with the disease.
