A true story, my true feelings of the ocean in a rhyme, ballad, Dr. Seuss kind of way...

Poem Artwork

One day while walking along the edge of the sea,
my small young daughter was taunting me,
to come in from the sandy shore,
but I would tell her no once more.
For years I've walked along the sand,
in this beautiful tropical land,
but not past my ankles have I dared,
my daughter teasing that I am scared.
"Do you fear sharks?" My daughter cried,
"No not really." (this a lie!)
"Can't you swim?" again she'd tease.
"Better than you dear if you please."
"Then come and play in this salty green water."
Said my little playing otter.
"Come here and hold my hand my eel,
and my reasoning to you I will reveal."
And so my youngster, impish and tan
came next to me at my command.
Joining hands we faced the sea.
"Stand still now." I said, "And look at me"
"Now turn and stand and face the wind
and in doing so we will begin."
We faced the ocean looking out.
"Mother, what is this all about?"
"Now close your eyes and stand up straight,
feel the wind and water - Wait!"
The tide came in the tide went out.
"Mother, what is this all about?"
Again, I said, "Feel what the ocean is saying."
She shrugged her shoulders - should she be praying?
The tide came in, the tide went round.
The water pulling us in losing ground.
"Did you feel it?" I then inquired.
"Feel what?" She said now seeming tired.
"Feel the souls of those living in this huge grave?
Feel them pulling you in the waves?
They pull at your ankles to join them here,
so many lost people in it over the years.
Their souls still haunting this ocean blue.
Wanting your life,wanting you.
It's hard for me to dance in a tomb.
A magnificent place and somber room.
The ocean's full of souls calling out to you,
feel them in the wind, the sky so blue.
Feel them pulling your ankles inviting you in,
feel them wanting their lives back again and again.
With each rolling wave upon the shore
they search the world, they search for more.
And I respect this endless ocean
a collector of souls, never stopping in motion.
And I am content to skirt upon its edge,
walking respectively so as not to tred.
You my love must learn to be
reverent to its majesty.
So call it fear if you must because I know,
I've still much to do before I go."
My daughter turned and smiling said,
tilting her small and youthful head,
"Let's build a castle and look for shells!"
She ran for her bucket and I thought - oh well!
I looked out into the vast green sea,
at the sky and water endlessly.
Another wave pulling as I turned away.
The souls of those waiting for another day.

Nice imagery, now I will always think of the dear ones that have perished in the sea/ocean as I tempt it myself. Great rhythm to this, but a scary message. Janet
