TEN FINGERS, TEN TOES
Red coals fused peachy plum ciders
mixing with caramel apple scent,
wafting in the caroling sleigh riders
with anticipation of cloves and mint.
Peanuts in the shell roast on the hearth
as we huddle under a glowing moon
reminded of the Christ Child’s birth
and our first grandchild coming in June.
Holly trims photos and sonogram news,
reminders as baby kicks from slumber.
Momma unwraps Daddy’s baby shoes,
Bear pajamas and ball cap for summer.
Spring sprinkles yellow Daffodils and Tulip
as first blades push through snowy ground.
Then all petals close, withered in heats cup
waiting as the miracle of birth comes around.
We couldn’t foresee our baby’s death,
angelic face cuddled in Mommy’s breast
no strength of life or warmth of breath,
yet he was formed perfectly, wholly blest.
How could this be the love God chose
taking back this gift entwined from within,
ten fingers, ten toes, black eyes, button nose?
Summer suddenly cold...hearts winter again.
