Staring out across this expanse of white
without a hope of traversing it soon.
Takes all he can to focus as he might
when his heart is beyond many a moon.
The only aim can be, the toil this day
when the sled broke and dogs can but bark.
He and they can but keep the cold at bay
which is harder still, when this world goes dark.
Only the memories cherished so dear
even though she be so far out of sight.
Keeps his inner most tender heart from fear
praying for the day they are every night.

Inner most tender heart. Only memories cherished so dear.
Praying for the day they are every night beyond many a moon.
Lovely poetry.

This 'shy of a sonnet' has its greatest strength when read aloud, I find. Lovely cadence and line structure. Much is happening in this poem as well.....a very lively line: "when the sled broke and dogs can but bark." A Lovely read, Budd. ~~ Diana
when someone is near their heart's love they may take them for granted until something blocks their being together and then the true, loving feeling is so dominate. Very good, Budd

Strange. Just before reading your poem, Neil Young's song, "A Heart of Gold," kept running through my mind.
