About some realities many people don't well understand. Most of us, I believe, are unaware that we're not as caring as we think we might be. And that addicts are punished way beyond what would be considered humane. Addicts are stigmatized by the general population. These are the types of issues I encounter at IRIS, an intensive drug abuse program that meets in groups. Each person goes for a total of 20 days, five days a week, 2 hours per day - then moves on to a 3-day week of men's or women's groups. A great many clients come back to IRIS for a second, third, or fourth time. This is because there are many relapses, and people become dependent on IRIS' structured group meetings.
