I think there really is no question.

The Seed

Is God for real, how do you feel,

There’s a big oak tree standing high and bold,
They say, it’s gotta be five hundred years old,

Grew from a small acorn out there in that field,
A bird maybe dropped it losing his meal,

Sure is a miracle with no others around,
Impossible to flourish in this type of ground,

Out here in the desert, it stands alone there,
When the sand all around is empty and bare,

There’s no sign of water, how could it live,
Is there an answer, science can give,

Studies reveal that unseen and deep,
There’s a miracle fault with a good water seep,

Hey the mystery is solved, beat yourself on the chest,
As a great scientist, you are the best,

But there’s another mystery, you’re not finished yet,
You’re just getting started and that’s a safe bet,

The acorn you researched came from , you found,
Four hundred miles the nearest around,

Maybe a wild pigeon, they swallow them whole,
Maybe he died by a small water hole,

Could be the answer, they migrate in fall,
Five hundred years , maybe this answers all,

No Sir , ,I’m sorry but there’s a lot more to come ,
Where did that first acorn come from,

You’ve come up with answers that seem to be,
Logical deductions and I’ll agree,

But scientist all over can’t seem to show,
How life started, they just don’t know,

If the oak tree produced the first acorn,
Then the first oak tree, was already born,

You say it evolved from a seed on the ground,
That millions of years later spread seeds all around,

Ok that’s good but the answer I need ,
Is where it all started, who made the first seed,

I’ve seen the arguments almost come to blows
But the best answer I’ve heard is, “God Only Knows!”

You're not trying to confuse me with that old question,
Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Cause if you are,
I'm not gonna tell you. So there!

When I was small I used to think that moulds were formed on the surface of the earth as it cooled down after lengthy period of time spat out from the sun. We were formed as crawling creatures, but we were moulds. As years passed we became humans. Oh well, that was my theory.

But then again, who put the sun there in the sky? How did the sun get there in the first place? How did the universe begin? Where did the universe come from? Where does it start and where does it end?

God only knows!

I wrote my first essay on the origin of life when I was in the eighth grade. I was proud of that piece. But when I got in my 20s, I realized that praising God when things went well and praying to God to make things better when they didn't, resulted in little than being required to join a cult of God believers. I didn't trust their entire control of my life. Making me free to make my own choices, wrong or right.

In 2004 I wrote a similar poem that you can access here… The link does not work because the poem needs to be reloaded, but the second link should get you there just fine.

And the story of the same name and theme…

Super, Tom. You're back to essentials instead of harping on humour for stand-up comics. Your last couplet says it all, except that if all the Multi-Universes were His own making, the question that nags is WHY? HE or SHE or IT must be a sado-masochist to put everyone in such a dither over and over again about it all. The ancient Hindu rishis call the whole thing "Lila", in other words, a "game" to amuse the LORD up above. One should ask those who create religions with their "certainties" if they didn't think up their "gods" to make more money for their own kind or just lord it over other inferiors who have no direct line (in their unverified opinion) to the ALMIGHTY!!! As you say, let's "come to blows" to settle this riddle/puzzle/enigma...well, probably not worth the effort after all...Bravo! Tom.
