i am (the brink of life you breathe)...

by Jeff Mason — Read all 207 poems by Jeff Mason

A picture of the two of us, circa 1977, Springfield, TN - I was trying not to smile.
In honor of the lady for whom it was written, my dear friend who left this world on Thanksgiving: Lanita Gibbs Barton August 28, 1961 - Nov 23, 2017.

Poem Artwork

i am... the brink of life you breathe,

where matchless diamonds cannot hide

in songs that soar above the breeze; that taste us full...

to laugh and cry again; as rising pleas

that yearn… and harken to the ages.

i am... restless here, as i blend into the static of the Milky Way

the silence now so deafening;

a ringing in my ears more fearsome than the train so close

upon the tracks we used to play and taunt; when i was so afraid to want.

i smell your scent erase the fears i try to hide so well,

amidst my dreams… afraid to wake

your pulse still racing in my mind, in synch with mine.

skipping rocks across the surface of that reflective steamy pond

the heady weeds of Spring still brushing past our anxious legs

in remembrance... all hours that never could last long enough;

not for the two of us.

in this night, i’ll rest no more, with these memories haunting me.

stealing breath of every sleepless moment;

breaking every promise i had made to once and all move on;

chasing sun-drenched you, while I... so cloaked in deeper darkness,

my own self-sacrifice; that price... my penance;

faintest subtle breezes wafting me along

somehow i am... so lost and longing... searching seeming endless skies;
how much longer will my echo fail to find its resonance? dropping endless;
not a single leaf to even flutter; no fault of words I’d ever dare to utter
running blind along my careful path, but long... with calloused feet;

faces everywhere; though none has yet, truly, to awaken me;

none but you, the one whose essence has so... shaken me!

i am... listless, drifting, listening to shadowed voices in the cool of starlit night

bringing back your words to me...

"i will love you till the end of time and never let you go!”

now our hands touch, to hold that damning fateful clock at bay.

a grain of sand among ten billion; and i am now convinced i’d find you anyway...

no matter what new rock you’ve rolled against your clubhouse door

i’ll always push that rock away; i’ll always want you more;

to taste your sudden velvet kisses never fading

i am... the brink of life you breathe;

my laughter holds no gilded song of self,

unless fulfilled by you; this parched and arid soul… thirsts for only you;

and every breath i take... is shallow now, without you here; without you near

to balance me.

and if my thoughts belie a truth, it’s only that my act was never treason;
i am forever bound to you, not out of duty; out of fate's own pure intentioned reason.
the wind, for us bespoke, whispered songs of no regret;
for those purple irises i placed outside your window;
and the nightingale that sang us through until the dew began to settle on our skin
and never… will i forget those nights the mockingbird kept us awake;
complaints were never voiced and never will be...

for the sun recalls our heat in vapored visions

and fevered touch between our sacred souls,

as i reflect upon those times no cloud could ever darken us;

the shifting, sifting sands of sunlit beaches... fighting over seashells

knowing we would toss them in the tides; to sink amid the swells

we were the art that life itself so dies to be...

and for that simple reason i do dwell long on thoughts of thee

as your sweet smile and liquid eyes still melt the steel of me

and still, and always… we are the love that Heaven’s angels envy

we are more than shards of echoes of the past;

we are Siren’s call of future’s shadow yet to cast;

the doorway, to the doorway of forever

in some vivid story that so clearly tells itself

without a single... spoken word;

a swift and purposed sword kept sacred in all things sanctified.

for (i am... the brink of life you breathe)

while i ache in mortal spirit-wounds

desperate for your taste again; i ask...

are we a fading remnant of the mountain’s song,

summit passed and gone;

a time that rushes swiftly by in hopes afraid to try?

why can’t i find you now, somewhere within my grasp?

vivid thoughts of you enrapture me, and capture me, long-cherished

me beneath this useless surface veil; such frail disguise

that never could feign hiding from your ever-piercing brilliant eyes

there is no other… ever, who could complete me full as you!

now i lie in state; in stasis; all the world to know my gravest fear

that i might lose that complement i hold so priceless and so dear;

this shrieking gasp now strains to fall upon your spirit’s ear

in anguished plea that begs to be...

the only voice you long to hear. ~

An ode written in eloquent sweetness and heartfelt
resolve, the likes of which I am not likely to ever
discover again.

I rarely say this but this one is a masterpiece, there's so much in this poem, and my heart ached as the felt words roll over me; I feel like I have felt like this before. You have an amazing way with words, I don't see this skill...mt heart goes out to you, to have loved someone like this is a real gift, so precious!

Clarifying: Nita did read this back when I first wrote it, and she loved it! I guess I should have made that known. Also, I gave her a copy of my book "Whispers in the Wake" and it's published in there as well. --Jeff

From this outpouring of your very soul, it is obvious how deeply affected you have become of her untimely passing at such a young age. If only she could read your words.

I can see how happy you two were in the photo and that happiness must have extended into every feature of your lives together. What you have written is a beautiful tribute to that love and happiness. 'Enjoyed!

Love ya!
