What is Life?
What is an orangutan?
Its orange fur
and placid gaze
through leafy tops of trees,
but seeing fruit
and frond
from grasping hand
to limb and swaying canopy,
is life as orangutan,
'tis life.
What is a tree?
Or, a brook lined with mosses
languid flow
down to a pond,
where lilypads and otter mingle?
They are life as tree, otter, and moss.
They, too, are life.
It is all life.
We are involved,
entangled, intertwined,
unfurling our tendrils,
clasping hand to hand,
tending and caring
as life. We are life.
The skeletons within,
the sinew, blood, and pulsing veins
tell of more than living.
They tell of purpose,
each cell, each strand of DNA,
spreading and growing.
Around the world,
the Earth, this planet,
amid a multitude of stars
and galaxies, each with purpose,
to live,
to be life.

Is the universe an endless series of random events, or
is it purpose-driven and cohesive? You've strengthened
my belief in life. Thank you for this gem.
There's only one thing missing. All of life is extremely aggressive. Underlying the peacefulness and cooperation that has evolved there is a struggle to survive where alliances amid the smallest of the plant and animal kingdom keep life in balance so that no one form of life takes over from the complexity that has evolved from which your beautiful poem emerges.
