After my mother's death, I returned to the place where I grew up, at the foot of an impressive mountain range in Southern California, the San Gabriel Mountains.
As I look upon the mountain of my birth,
the morning light casts their slanting rays
upon its snowy crest.
I've gazed upon the tree-lined heights
through the years of my youth
until called away when all youths
look further beyond childhood lives.
Returning, I am inspired to write poetry,
perhaps to dream anew,
for loss has hung my head downward,
while this awe-inspiring view
has reminded me to, once again,
seek higher ground.
Everyone seeks higher ground. You have done it beautifully in this poem. We all should return to our birthplace from time to time to give us a perspective on how far we've come in life.
Mary Angela Nangini's poems celebrate the richness of life and love. From the city to cottage-country and the roads in between, Nangini explores the changing seasons of her varied region. (This book will soon be reprinted in hard cover.)
