Sometimes there just aren't enough Kleenex...

Poem Artwork

I’m fearful of

what’s in the void

in my heart…

the one that formed,

when you left.

It’s a chasm of tears

boiling,

churning,

teeming with ache…

I’ve buried the pain

where no one can look…

under heavy, dense layers

of work and of sleep,

more work and more sleep…

I grip hard and hold fast

to the layers

that swathe

sorrow,

the heartache,

unbearable loss…

But the layers are slipping,

disrobing the void,

flinging one, then two,

then another one yet…

like Salome’s veils…

soon all will be bared,

like the nerve of a tooth,

pulsing,

straining

a crumbling dam…

Then bittersweet tears

released from their lair,

will pour out, gush out

like Niagara,

Iguazu,

Tahquamenon Falls…

until all that remains

is that void in my heart…

and I finally

admit that

you’re gone.

Within the last year and a half I have lost both of my in-laws... even though we knew their time was short, it still hurt... so many memories come alive and it those memories which will... eventually... give us a new life... an excellent tribute... your Dad would be proud

For these types of losses, there are no words...to say I am sorry for your grief does nothing to heal of fill the void, no matter how heartfelt, they are still hollow words. I lost my father so I will say that though I can be empathetic, I cannot know the personal pain that washes through you. This is an excellent poem, Michelle and perhaps through placing your sorrows upon the page you can let go of the pain and live within his warm love that radiates through you.
Take care,
Sherry

Gone but definitely not forgotten. You've penned your deepest heart with this one. Rest assured that one day you will meet again.

This is soul-reaching in expression of meaning and sentiments, Michelle; most compelling. Best wishes of love, peace, and strength to you,

Michelle,
Like so many illnesses, emphysema is one of those that slowly take our loved ones, while we can do nothing but sit and watch.
That pain becomes almost or even moreso intense than that of the patients'. In the end we know their suffering has ended, and they are at peace. But ours? We can only take one day at a time, and get through it without them the best way we can, and with the passing of time will come the ease of our loss. We don't want to forget them, (as if we could anyway) but there does come that point where we have to let them go, and just be happy knowing that we will one day be together again, and what a wonderful time that will be.
My prayers are with you as you go through this very difficult time.

This is a lovely poem for your father, and perhaps poetry is part of the healing...

Gone but never gone is how I prefer to think of both of my long departed parents. I lost both when I was in my early twenties but they are still close by even today.

Michelle, you have my deep heartfelt condolences. Thank you so much for sharing this It truly is the first writing I've read that ever came close to the way I felt when my father died. It's been many years, but your poem, so beautifully says what I felt and still feel though with the passage of time the pain recedes and peace replaces it.

Touches so deeply the reader when we lose a person so close it is hard to allow the healing process to be one of strength and growth you capture the grief, pain and emptiness one feels. IF this is a personal loss I wish peace.
