A Time Travel

by Debashish Haar — Read all 156 poems by Debashish Haar

Sunday, April 2, 2006

An hour for time travel:
Vermeer accepts
Bernard Shaw’s invitation,
schools of arts and linguistics meet.
Dali and Escher host
Columbus for a drink, a whole world’s
rediscovered, after centuries, in a bed.

At 5.30 am, he wakes in the sheet
that had rivers and streams.
The streams flow upstairs
into the terrace, and he swims.

He’s the only creator,
sipping the solar system in a cup.

The wind frees the sheets of dream
and collapses like powder in grass.
Pictures fade like rainbows
and splash their colors.

Very far above me with the references. Makes me wish I was better read to daily face an uncertain world. I too dream of time travel.

"a whole world’s
rediscovered, after centuries, in a bed"

There are many worlds yet to be re-discovered beyond our waking senses.

Would love to see this made into a screenplay... the BBC did a series about the Romantic Poets recently, and I loved the idea that they were all knocking about in the world at the same time, albeit their experiences were all so different... this takes those ideas, s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d across time and continents, too, but how coool would it be to have this diverse group of mover-shakers round to supper and to be a fly on the wall listening to their interactive debates??!! Anyways, probably not at all relevant, but this is the kind of Daliesque meander this poem takes my mind on... unlike the detail which you have chosen, which is delightfully precise (hence, probably, my ability to take so many tangents to it!!). Enjoyed, Debs, thank you. Kate xx
