Wake up every morning looking for the sun
Looking for a way to put my nightmares on the run
With my second cup of coffee, I watch the TV news
And curse old Mr. Folger for waking up my blues.
Another soldier killed last night,
Somebody shot a cop.
Chicken Little had it right
The sky’s about to drop.
A million dead in Africa. A kid in Abilene
Has some weird constipation, we’ve reporters on the scene.
Another cup of coffee and the papers have it worse.
One never should depend on names like Turner, Maxwell, Hearst.
Nothing’s fair or balanced. And there’s nothing fit to print
Reporters writing stories like they’re pulling belly lint.
American’s all hate the French,
The nations too obese.
Humpty’s Dumped from off the bench
And Mother’s lost her geese.
The world is getting way too warm, the science has it wrong!
And someone’s selling private parts on eBay for a song.
In desperation coffee haze I reach out for a drink
And turn on the computer, hoping someone there can think.
To check out all the sites I see and wade through all the sludge,
And wonder why, with clear set eye, anyone reads Drudge.
Cinderella’s found her prince
And Kerry kissed a frog.
The Pipers pied and woe betide,
The tail now wags the dog.
I realize now, I don’t know how, the world is just too deep.
So take a dozen Prozac and try to go to sleep.
Great sarcastic humour, Peter--love it. Last week after a 17 year old nephew here from Mexico on drugs was asked to leave, he stabbed his aunt and five girl cousins just five doors down my street. The youngest girl, ten, died and he fled. I came home to a media blitz. A week before, the girls had ignored my plea, but the murderer, speaking good English, had gladly helped me get my van ramp up.
You're right - a large part of our public experience feels like a garbage can. Is this impression truthful? I don't know, frankly. But we seem to live in a time of genuine sadness. Very interesting write. Franz
:) I love it, Peter, just read it at RT and was going to suggest you post it. It's moody and melancholy, poignant and sad and very modern in tone, but not in 'balladness'...
