Eat me!

“I have of late- but wherefore I know not- lost all my mirth, forgotton all custom of exercise; and indeed it goes so heavily with my disposition that this goodly frame, the earth, seems to me a sterile promontory, this most excellent canopy, the air, look you, this brave o’erhanging firmament, this majestical roof fretted with golden fire, why, it appears no other thing to me than a foul and pestilent congregation of vapours.

What a piece of work is man!”

                                                                                                       Hamlet

ONCE UPON AN EGO

By H.J. Cruz

7/20/07

Where do you think your growing?

Feed me, precious gifts life’s sewing.

As A child grows, so too does our ego,

And what of the spirit?

Now hard to get near it!

Seeds of external adaptation,

Vicissitudes of life’s usurpations,

Be it more; be it less,

Another turn on the nautilus.

Thrust upon a city life,

Bitter love, abundant strife,

Benevolent facaccia’s radiant essence,

Welded cages - barbed-wire fence.

Searched I for thee with hearts afire,

To knowest truth en soul desire,

Trespassers beckoned eternal woe,

Lamentiss forgiveness disperse thy foe.

Crypts ensconced yond sands a time,

Poltergisted evidence sparing no crime,

Quelling histories o gnashing teeth,

Spirit ascending cocked to impeach.

Egoist tendered, high alter now shed,

Patterns transmuted, the dragon now fed,

Yet occasions merit in times of abhor,

Suffer thine wrath when ego’s roar!

What is it like to have an ego? After reading this I'm still not sure.

What I love about your poetry is your wordcraft, even when the aspies means I cant follow your flow:)

A wonderfully put together poem reminds me of my life at the moment, situation not what I think I deserve and the dragon may not be hungry but the old lion thinks people around me just don't get it. I liked this a lot for it has made me think about how much of it is ego driven. I'm better then this. Lady J

though mans inflated ego may think he's unique with poems like this it isn't too far from the truth;-) A wonderful sharing H.J.

HJ,
I loved your woven words of ego enlightenment. I am also a lover of Shakespeare! I could not be a costume designer and not love Shakespeare! Anyway, I really enjoyed this beautiful poem!

I am fascinated by the relationship of spirit and ego. Essentially I think they are two sides of the same coin - one the mirrored potential of the other, which too readily becomes corrupted. I also think that they are constant in terms of "sizing", in terms of adult/child relationship... our body simply matures around it! :)) But, my goodness, HJ... I am such a sucker for Shakespeare and find that in my own work I feel I spout as if part of a Shakespearean chorus line, as one of many players. But I very much like the contemporary edginess you insert into the epicurean styling here: it adds a bit of zing to the fruitiness of it. Or am I sounding too up myself??!! :)) Roar away, O lofty one! Tis much enjoyed by this punter. TY Kate xx
