horizon at midnight

detour, road closed
backtracking
into the belly of the beast
this self destructive defeatist
hangs by a hair
to what is shaky or unsteady
falling and rising
inevitably caught up
in this surreal spin
this state of limbo or destiny
which imperils the journey
upon life's ups and downs
missing the scenery
driving late at night
searching for a vision
not unlike the sun
which is always chasing the moon
scattering stars and phantoms
this struggle with shadows
as light streaks tremble
flexing night and day
I peer into the horizon where
the moon hangs upside down
as a yellow orange sliver
along this southeasterly view
and wonder how I missed it

I liked your use of the journey towards the horizon to reflect upon our inner ups and downs and the glimpses of certainty alternating with life's uncertainties. A well-written poem enjoyable on several levels.
We may be detoured, but we're bound to finally see that upside down moon!

a surreal view, Dale... which is probably what it's like after long hours on the road, driving as it were along horizon's edge. Perspective is a funny thing... even funnier when exhaustion also kicks in. I think your Big Country skies must be amazing territories to keep pace with and traverse at sunrise and sunset... our little British ones are usually hampered by terrestrial impediments and restricted views! I enjoyed this downside-up view as I journeyed with you! :)) xx
