The Living Rose

On Valentine’s Day,
I bought my hubby a single long stem rose.
Red represents strength and passion.
And that’s the color I chose.
Simple but with beauty
to say the words I needed to say.
It said I love you on that special day.
He proudly put it in a vase
and set it on our special place,
on top the TV for all to see.
It had some thorns along the stem,
but we have had a few of those
since I have been with him.
Sometimes as time passes we lose the simple
and beautiful things in married life.
That’s when our lives become filled with strife.
We wonder how our happiness slipped past,
and if our marriage is going to last.
The red rose turned dark after a while.
And I told him to throw it into the garbage pile.
For some reason he kept hanging onto it.
Looking at that dead rose was giving me fits.
I asked him every little bit
to throw the rose away and get rid of it.
He didn’t do as I asked
so I decided to do it myself at last.
I picked up the vase just today,
and I was amazed and didn’t know what to say.
Along side the stem was leaves of green
I couldn’t believe that I had seen.
a dried up rose in a dried up vase
was starting a rose bush right in front of my face.
I was so shocked to see the new life begin,
on a rose that I thought had met its end.
I told my hubby that maybe this was an omen.
That our marriage that is sometimes dead
would start to blossom
like the rose again.
Full of passion, beauty, and love.
Maybe that is God’s message from above.
