A sad hymn about infidelity and distrust in a dissolving marriage.
Note: To allay any concerns readers may have, this poem is not about me or my marriage. My wife and I are still happily married and do not face these sad problems, but truly it is something far too common in today's world.
First you say you do,
Then you say you don't,
And you say that you will
When you know that you won't.
Well, I tell you right now
It's getting hard to try
When you go and do one thing
But say something else.
You promise us time,
Say, "Be home by nine,"
Then it's around midnight
Before I see your light.
Tell me, what am I to do
To avoid a fight?
'Cause it's very plain to see
That there's something else.
I've tried so very hard,
Spent my whole life striving
To be an honest man,
Never conniving,
But all I'm getting back from you
Are superficial platitudes.
No, they're not true .
Oh, what have I got to do
To win you over?
Convince you before we're through
To stay together?
We know one and one is two
But are you one and three?
It's getting very clear to me
That you want it to be.
I've been torn up
I've been shot down
You wouldn't believe
The times I've frowned
But through it all
I felt your love
Coming home to me.
Do you still love me?
Now here we are
Bound together
But our hearts seem to spread apart
More than ever.
You're all up and down the town
Playing games I never had to learn.
'Cause what good's that learning
When I don't want it that way?
I ask you right now
Why are you playing again?
Do you even care anymore?
That I'm crying,
All torn up inside
By your lying?
This kind of life
Isn't what I signed up for.
You may have been true
When you said "I do!"
But what'll it be
When we say it's through?
How can I stay true
When you're on the move?
Since I know one and one is two
I won't be number three.
No more.

Very frank and straightforward. Honesty is needed in any relationship, more so with married couples. Great point and style.
