Gunnar's poem for Eric, my brother

This was a letter that a 10 year old boy gave to my Mom and I at my brother's wake. It touched us so very, very much as it showed the real Eric. Eric died of a heart attack at 42, with the same heart defect that I and my cousins have, but he never went to the doctor, like many many men- GO TO THE DOCTORS. Your families will thank you. Thank you, Gunnar for this beautiful ode to Eric. God bless you always and you family, too.

Poem Artwork

Eric was a wealthy man.

He had many hopes and dreams coming up in his life.

We will all miss Eric deeply.

We all loved and cared for him.

Too bad Eric has to go up there.

Eric drew wonderful paintings.

Eric, we will always love you and whatever comes

into our lives, you will always be our dearest

most thoughtful friend.

This is a poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson that we printed on the back of

Eric's St. Francis Mass card. Eric also loved animals, and he worked as

a caretaker at a cat shelter for many years. He never made lots of

money, drove fast cars or dated beautiful models. He was a recovering

addict and was 2 years clean when he passed, though prior to a 3 year

relapse, he had been clean 11 years, so 13 in total. He was in AA and

NA, and at his wake, there was not even one second that went by that

my mom and i didn't have someone telling us either how much he

affected their lives or that he had SAVED their lives. In life, you would

never have known how he helped others because he wasn't a

braggart about it.  Children loved his gentle nature. He was a great poet

and painter, brother and son, and I am extremely proud to have loved

him so completely that there was nothing left unsaid between us, and

when he passed, I still felt him with me. Thanks, Eric, for being the best

brother ever.

"To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intelligent people

and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics

and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the

best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by healthy child, a

garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has

breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded."

- Ralph Waldo Emerson -

Glad I came across this tribute.
Eric was a delightful man who loved his sister.
His dreams were for his sister to be happy - he was happy when he saw her laughing and happy.

Far too young to die - Eric gave much and still had much to give.

I have fond memories of talks we had in private, as well as us Kinda cheating at board games. But at least we won.

Eric is forever in my heart.

You can shed tears that he is gone
Or you can smile because he has lived

You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back
Or you can open your eyes and see all that he has left

Your heart can be empty because you can't see him
Or you can be full of the love that you shared

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday

You can remember him and only that he is gone
Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
Or you can do what he would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

What an amazing testimony of resiliant life and strength that is magnified by the beauty of your brother's soul as reflected back by the words gifted by Gunnar and by the Emerson ones chosen by yourselves. There is agony in your sharing and yet celebration and rightful pride, too, in the life of this dear one who never vaunted himself and sought only to share what he could with whomsoever he could, from animals to children to fellow addicts. This is truly humbling. Grief in mourning is a painful path, but may it become hallowed as you honour and embellish it with such warm thoughts and memories. My prayers are with you and your family, Michelle. xx

Very moving!

It is unfortunate we must depart from loved ones.
The pain is virtually unbearable for each one of us.
