In an instant,
Everything you own is about to go up in smoke.
Once carefree, now riddled with anxiety,
Hidden in the darkness of the black and orange sky.
Fighting to save your belongings, drenched in ash falling from three stories high.
What is taken for granted, quickly humbles you to your core,
Feeling the incredible heat, you hit the floor.
In what seems like an eternity,
Thoughts of what to escape with, flashing in an order of priority.
Eventually the sky turns a white gray, removing the threat of adversity.
Fear, dehydration, and exhaustion now replaced with gratitude,
For the firefighters showing tremendous fortitude.
Shout out to my husband and his fire crew saving our house & neighborhood in October. It takes someone with real fortitude to run into a fire, that would not be me!
