I was listening to the Tom Joyner show and Huggie Lowdown called Tom Joyner light brown. I inhaled his words and exhaled them through the following words. You will soon read that it took me at record speed through my childhood and back to the present for a second then off to the future. A future that can be altered!?!

I  Am Not My Complexion

by April Sims

Why does it matter the lightness of my complexion?

Why does it seem to give your brain an erection and

Makes your eyes stand at attention?

And call me names like yellow, redbone, honey beige, light brown

Oh, and my favorite light, bright damn near white

Well, stand down soldier

Because I am giving you orders

To judge me by my contents and my character

That is beneath my light skin

It should not matter how much cream

Flows through my bloodstream

Because we are all the same because "they"

(Whoever they are)

Say one drop commences the colored chart

We must learn to love one another

And embrace one another

Or pretty soon we will be extinct and "they"

Will say mission accomplished

I guess I am naive, because I was raised in a big melting pot where all the races, creeds, colors, etc. made up one big stew.  I have come to peek from behind my rose colored glasses and see things for what they are.  Things that are today but with acknowledgement can be changed for a better future.

Bravo, April! I am colorblind, too. I love all colors God put in the world. Character is what defines a person, not color. And don't we all have the same color of life in our bloodstreams? Red? Great awareness write, April.

Hello April, I read your poem,"I Am Not My Complexion". I found it so true to the way some people act. As I am a Metis person I have treated ,at times, like a an alien creature just because of the color of my skin. Fortunatly my Ma told me; when I was a child, to 'ignore the ignorant'. Keep up the good work. Please feel free to visit my site here in the"Den"

I have had this thought within my mind rolling around trying to escape, it just so happens that today you have ...or rather I have...found the very things I was wondering about. Funny how you go through life and fifty or so yrs later....not that we are old...just wiser...we find ourselves placing thought and reflecting upon the outer layer of our character.

Maybe within the future generations this thought can be dilluted enough to where light brown is the only reality.

nice work, April...

You are not your complexion; you are a PERSON first, and that should be the ONLY thing that matters, not how "dark" or "light" you are! Be proud of yourself, honey; I am! God bless you!

We're all from the same pot--just planted with different seed. I had similar feelings as you wrote in your poem and my first book, Wall of Color, expressed my thoughts and feelings.

April,

Skin color doesn't matter: it's the person within. 'Nuff said. :)

A powerful call to end the prejudices written to those who don't know any better; well done!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
