Tired of being the family scapegoat
She crawled beneath the shoe display
Her parents kept shopping
As usual
Not noticing she was gone

As she sat in the small cabinet
She planned her new life
She would live in the store
There was food in the snack bar
Child-sized demo beds in Housewares
Bathrooms, too...
But most important
No one yelling and hitting
She could relax and live life
Without worrying about being 'in trouble'

But then
She heard her father stomping
Around the shoe display
Yelling her name
If they found her in the cabinet
Who knows what they'd do

She waited until the stomping feet passed
Then crept out of the cabinet
"Where were you?" yelled her father.
Her dream of a peaceful life
Burst like a bubble
It was back to Scapegoat City,
Back to the upset stomachs and headaches
That were the only cries for help
She felt it was safe to give...

But which no one ever understood.

A very creative rather discomforting profile of abuse..Effectively penned and pointed. Well Done, Darlene.

Best Wishes,
