Another shooting, another bombing, another cruelty,
soul-wrenching, gut-knotting fear, angst, subliminal terrors.
Is this terror or accident?
Pre-meditated murder or self-defense?
It’s all there is

life will be
no guarantees
no warrantees
be it the Middle Ages of misery, pestilence and gore
or the 21st Century of greed, fraud, and mayhem
life is a riotous risk
Big Risk
a game of chance, a lottery
bet your life, bet your soul
who will win nobody knows
so we think we are great
we are “advanced”
we are civilized and modern?
We’re still of the pestilence ages
the barbarian ages
the ape ages
we are hardly better
you think because we wear deodorant
and brush and floss and smile nicely
we are better?
because we have wireless and SUV’s and DVD’s?
Hey we are just as mortal human and inhuman
as the Huns, Neanderthals and
next savage down the evolutionary tree
show me a cool dude
and I’ll show you a potential killer
show me a great leader
and I’ll show you a latent barbarian
show me a star CEO
and I’ll show you a robber
show me a great civilization
and I’ll show you the chinks and cracks
that prophesy its demise already
yeah we are cool and “advanced”
just don’t mess with us
we are rich
just keep your paws away from mine
we are here today
but tomorrow is not a cinch
not a given
not even a hint
we may wake up to a gilded sunrise
or a nuclear blast
- and won’t that just ruin your day -
no guarantees buddy
SUVs or DVDs or PCs
not withstanding
these are no shields to the normal revolution
of the sidereal cycle which is much bigger than US
we tumble in a dumb slow mindless cycle
and we cannot stop it prevent it or derail it
enjoy your Dairy Queen in the meantime buddy
watch it before it melts
you bought this life as is
no warranties
no guarantees
repair may or may not work
so go take it enjoy it while you can
you might get a keeper or a lemon
we can’t tell we can’t do or sing or say
Life is but a one-night stand in sidereal time
our feeble notch in the astral domain
it might be a great time or a bummer deluxe
the wheel spins
place your bets
the house always wins
the chips stack to the moon
but yours only reach to the clouds
or maybe just your shoe tops
and as you grab them…
... i would say we are better. we have the same stuff as our forebearers, but we also have the damnable fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil [for lack of a better word i will just call it guilt] and more's the pity for that.

This poem was full of emotion. I found it powerful, and to most extents, I agree.
Yes, we live in perilous times and it's hard to see the good in all of it sometimes. But it's out there, don't give up. A thought provoking piece of work.
