Chapter Two

12:30 am

i pick up your hand
it folds gently around mine
your fingers relax into place
i remember why i am in love
why i am with you
and i wonder why
i feel this way

two days later
you came in
i was organizing
the punk A-M rack
the door clattered shut
bell clanking against glass
bringing my brother
my parents’ real son
out into the shop with us
you looked at him
smiled politely
said hello
and then you turned to me
you whispered your name to me
handed me a piece of paper
your phone number
i should give you a call sometime
you would love to talk to me
i smiled at you
your eyes glowed
you took a chance and brushed
a single strand of blonde hair
out of my eyes
you left the store
i smiled for the rest of the day

i called you
we hung out
you told me about your life
your drunken parents
they live in Detroit
you live here
with your aunt
your mother's sister
who took custody when she saw
what was happening in that household
you are happy here
we become inseparable
i realize one day just how much
how much you mean to me
my parents love you
your aunt adores me
there is never a second
we are apart that i do not think of you
you feel the same way about me
in the back of my mind i know
i feel that this emotion
this happiness is too good
it wont last
but i ignore it
i pretend i don’t feel it

and as we reach the darkest part
of the night
my mind, i realize
is made up
i look at you with longing
i want you to wake
i want you to talk me out
of this madness i am feeling
i want to see your eyes
the deep forest of your eyes
one
more
time
