repulsed as the winter solstice claws at the sky
I milked gray clouds today to replenish my tears
no innate beauty is to be found in hibernating flora
as I mourn with the locust the death of greenery
oh mortality why have you characterized me?
the moon has a beautiful full face though pallid
from the chill of earth at its half pirouette
trees hemorrhage no sap from wounds in frosting air
all those that can burrow have done so and the nesters
are secure with no forays or ventures scheduled
wild dogs roam chasing ravens and turkey vultures
to secure carrion to sustain them while no prey
dares to provide them with destiny’s last chase
winter writes the food chain menu with prices dear
nature’s wild and domesticated children huddle to suckle opportunity’s breast

Rosetta was born in 1909 as the youngest of ten children. The family had more laughter than money and neighbors would knock on their door to ask, "Can we come in and laugh, too?"
