Broken Arrow Trail

Red rock glows in late afternoons
Once sandstone and hilly dunes
A cataclysmic quake turns water to land
Peaks jut up where once was sand
A trail once part of a movie set
Now traversed by jeeps one won’t forget

Hold onto your hat going uphill
With four-wheel drive it’s quite a thrill
Tires squeal and tension rods bend
On the other side when the jeep descends
Spectacular views of Bell Rock and more
Glimpses of mule deer and eagles that soar

Magnificent canyon walls surround
Plays with the sun so shadows abound
Junipers and yucca plants dot your path
Red dust ascends in the jeep’s aftermath
Crevices carved in rock everywhere
Protruding green plants with prickly pear

This is the land of the Navaho
Where union soldiers once were foe
An entire civilization relegated to reservations
A culture lost without much sensation
Broken Arrow Trail remains the same
Dusty, narrow, hilly, and untamed
