Two sit at a bar and stare at their glasses
Life slowed now when once was fast
Another scotch for the lady here
Before I order another beer
Haven’t I seen you here before?
Jesus, this line works no more
Music drones on inaudible to some
The smoke-filled room overcomes
All sense of taste, smell, and touch
For unloved souls who suffer much
Lonely nights draw people in
For a ray of hope in this stranger’s den
Too much eye shadow and cologne
On faces wrinkled and forlorn
Another drink for my friend
Who sits by me at the end
Of life’s pleasures lost long ago
Drowned by tears and tales of woe
Adieu my lady for I must leave
Before you think me pitiful and naïve
Empty glasses left behind
A relic of the clouded mind
Depart I must before it’s too late
To save myself from a terrible fate
